We will leave Cusco at 5:00 am and head towards Marcoccasa (3400m / 11154f), passing the village of Mollepata (3000m / 9843f). In Marcoccasa we will meet up with the horsemen and the rest of the group and begin our trek. We start walking inside a magnificent valley, surrounded by the most important snow-capped mountains, such as Humantay (5217m / 17116f) and Salkantay (6264m / 20551f). Our camp will be in Soraypampa (3900m / 12795f).
After breakfast, we will depart to the Salkantay Pass (4600m / 15092f), which offers an exceptional view of the snow-capped Salkantay (6264m). Thereafter we will descend again and have time to enjoy the growing vegetation of the ecosystem. Our camp will be at Rayanpata (3350m / 10990ft), in the middle of the rainforest.
The third day is dedicated to the flora of the region and its plantations. After descending into a dark forest and enjoying the diversity of species of orchids, bromeliads and many other plants, we will see coffee, cocoa and fruit plantations. In addition, we will have the pleasure of meeting the local families of Chaullay (2950m / 9678ft) Wiñaypoco (2650m / 8694f), La Playa (2100m / 6890f) and Lucmabamba (2000m / 6561ft). Our camp will be in Lucmabamba.
This afternoon you will stay in contact with a local rural family in the forest where you will have the opportunity to witness the cultivation and processing of coffee. Depending on the variety, newly planted coffee trees take approximately 3 to 4 years to start bearing fruit.
The fruit, called cherry coffee, turns an intense and bright red color when it is ripe and ready to be harvested. Due to the botanical characteristics of the coffee tree and the fact that coffee is often grown in mountainous areas, the widespread use of mechanical harvesters is not possible and the ripe coffee cherries are generally harvested by hand, a laborious and difficult process. We will show and explain the entire process from tree to cup. You will also have the opportunity to ask the locals your own questions about the growing process.
After breakfast, we will walk along the Inca trail to the archaeological site of Llactapata at 2650 m / 8694f (beautiful landscapes to discover flora and evidence of the Inca culture). From here we will have an exceptional view over the Machu Picchu mountain and the Vilcanota canyon). We will then continue to the hydroelectric train station (1950m / 6398f), where we will stop for a moment to relax before continuing by train to the town of Machupicchu (2050m / 6726f). Overnight in the village of Machu Picchu.
We will leave our hotel after breakfast at 5:30 am and head to Machu Picchu (2400m / 7874f) by tourist bus. We will arrive at the citadel around 6:00 am. After a guided tour of the archaeological site, which includes information about the life and culture of the Incas, you will have enough time to enjoy Machu Picchu and Wayna Picchu (2750m / 9022f) on your own. We will leave Aguas Calientes by train around 6:20 p.m. Until then, you will have time for lunch at one of the good restaurants. In addition, you can visit the hot springs in Aguas Calientes to relax a bit. At the indicated time we will take the train to Ollanta and board the transport that will take us to Cusco.
